Taylor Swift made history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday as she received the inaugural Artist Director Honors and premiered the music video for her new song, ‘Patient Zero’.The new honour recognises artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and advanced visual storytelling. Swift was presented with the award by Dakota Johnson, who also happened to be her lead actress in the ‘Patient Zero’ music video.

During her acceptance speech, Swift reflected on her two decades of involvement in music videos and thanked her fans for encouraging her work behind the camera. “First of all, I want to say thank you to MTV for giving this platform to music video so long ago,” Taylor said and continued, “I got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos twenty years ago. And, since then, I’ve gotten to be a part of making 60 music videos, roughly 60 music videos. 18 of those I wrote and directed, and I really love writing and directing music videos.”She continued by crediting her fans for making the creative process rewarding, saying, “I gotta tell you though, the main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun. You make it so rewarding because you actually care about what we’re making. I want to say thank you to everyone who ever worked on a music video that I got to be a part of, I learned something from every single person that worked alongside me on these projects.”Swift also thanked the people she had worked with throughout her music-video career before teasing the audience with the premiere of her latest visual. “Mainly I want to say thank you to the fans and rather than say anything else, I think rather than keep talking, I would love, if it’s okay with you, show you my latest music video!” she said, before the show cut to Patient Zero.

About ‘Patinet Zero’
Directed by Swift, the cinematic video stars Johnson and Colin Farrell and was officially announced as the world premiere for the VMAs. The song is part of ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore’, the expanded edition of Swift’s album.The honour also made Swift the most awarded solo artist in VMA history. She entered the ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 VMA wins and took her tally to 31 with the new award.
