KOLKATA: In an extraordinary move, Mohammedan SC on Thursday removed Humayun Kabir as president of the club, just two months after the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder was chosen to head the 135th-year-old institution’s administration.Ghazal Uz Zafar has been named the club’s new president with immediate effect.Soon after having been officially unveiled as the financially struggling club’s new president on June 6, Kabir promised to “solve the club’s financial problems.”However, it has been learnt that three of his cheques issued by him to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore to tackle the club’s financial requirements, eventually returned dishonoured by the bank as crisis over clearing players and staff members’ pending dues and other liabilities worsened.According to club sources, a notice was issued to Kabir seeking his explanation on unpaid funds but he didn’t respond to it.“The club called an executive committee meeting today and the decision to remove Mr Humayun Kabir was unanimous,” said a club official on Thursday.“The Executive Committee reviewed the Club’s prevailing financial position and discussed the immediate measures required to ensure financial and administrative continuity,” the club said in a statement.“The meeting also took note of the outstanding financial commitments of the Club and the urgent need to address its liabilities towards players, coaching staff, employees, statutory authorities, vendors and other creditors,” it further noted.
