NEW DELHI: India’s Asian Games campaign received a significant boost on Tuesday as two gold medals on Day 10 helped the country climb back into the top 10 of the medal table. Neeru, women’s relay team deliver golden double

Dhanda made history by winning India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the women’s trap event. Despite incessant rain affecting visibility, she remained composed to finish with 28 hits in the final, setting an Asian Games record. It was also India’s first individual shooting gold of the Games.Athletics then produced another gold as Kiran, Prachi Choudhary, MR Poovamma and Vithya Ramraj won the women’s 4x400m relay in 3:29.69.For Poovamma, the 36-year-old, it was another chapter in her Asian Games career after being part of India’s gold-medal winning relay teams in 2014 and 2018. Vithya added the relay gold to her breakthrough campaign after earlier bettering PT Usha’s more than four-decade-old national record in the 400m hurdles.

Eight medals but mixed athletics results

India’s athletics campaign produced a mixed bag, with 19-year-old Pooja Singh winning high jump bronze after clearing 1.84m and Gulveer Singh completing a medal treble with bronze in the 5000m, adding to his silver medals in the 10,000m and 1500m.India also won bronze in the 4x100m mixed relay through Gurindervir Singh, Sneha Sathyanarayana, Animesh Kujur and Harita Bhadra in a season-best 41.06 seconds.The men’s 4x400m relay team of Vishal TK, Dharamveer Choudhary, Jay Kumar and T Manu settled for bronze in 3:01.61, missing out on defending the Hangzhou title.Shooting added another silver in the women’s trap team event, while boxing guaranteed three medals. Narender took bronze after losing his 90+kg semifinal, while Parveen and Ankush Panghal advanced to their respective finals.

Two golds lift India back into top 10

The twin gold-medal haul proved crucial in the overall standings. India’s 53 medals moved the country back into 10th place, while China continued to dominate with 254 medals.Japan followed with 183 medals, while South Korea and Uzbekistan had 95 and 44 respectively.For India, the biggest takeaway from Day 10 was the return to the top 10, powered by two gold medals that took its overall haul beyond the 50-medal mark.
