Reflecting on the long hiatus, the filmmaker told India Today that the Covid-19 pandemic made him question whether there was a reason to continue making films when audiences were no longer able to experience them in theatres.“I was in doubt as to why I should make a film when it cannot be seen in a cinema hall. I almost stopped thinking about making a film,” he said.However, as theatres gradually reopened and audiences returned, Adoor found himself reconsidering the idea of directing another film.“People have started coming back to the cinemas, and I thought that was a good thing to notice. That is how I started working on a script and then made this film, which is just completed now,” he added.

‘Padayatra’ features Mammootty in the lead, with the actor also serving as a producer. However, the filmmaker himself rejects such classifications.“What I make is real cinema. Not parallel cinema, not art cinema, not commercial cinema. I make films.
