LUCKNOW: A 30-second dashcam video purportedly capturing the fatal road accident involving Abaan Ahmed (21), son of slain mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, and his friend Sonu, surfaced online and went viral on Wednesday. The footage, recorded on August 6, shows a Hyundai Creta travelling at high speed, overtaking a pickup truck before apparently losing control and crashing into a road divider. The impact was so severe that the SUV was thrown several feet into the air.The video was recorded by the dashboard camera of a vehicle travelling behind the Creta. The accident occurred on August 6 in the Poonch police station area, around 70 km before Jhansi, while Abaan and his companions were travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet his elder brother, Ali Ahmed, who is lodged in Jhansi jail.According to the account accompanying the video, its location has been independently matched with the accident site, with nearby houses and other landmarks visible in the footage.A local reporter who reached the spot shortly after the crash also indicated that the location and circumstances seen in the video corresponded with the accident site.Preliminary reports had initially suggested that the driver lost control while attempting to avoid an animal that suddenly came onto the highway. However, the newly surfaced dashcam footage appears to show the Creta overtaking a pickup truck immediately before veering towards the divider. The exact sequence of events leading to the crash is expected to be established through the police investigation. The Creta was reportedly travelling at around 120 kmph when it crashed into the divider on the side where Abaan was seated. The collision caused extensive damage to the front portion of the vehicle and left all five occupants injured.Abaan and Sonu died in the crash, while three others — Umar Ahmed, Mohammad Zaid and Aslam — were injured and taken to a nearby health facility.A witness, Deepak Yadav, who was among the first people to reach the spot, said he heard the sound of the collision and found the occupants trapped inside the mangled vehicle. When a door could not be opened, he brought an iron rod from a nearby house and broke it open to rescue them.According to the witness’s account, Abaan was conscious for a brief period after being pulled from the wreckage and identified himself before losing consciousness. He had suffered severe internal injuries. The post-mortem examination reportedly found extensive internal trauma. Abaan had suffered ruptures to the liver, lungs and spleen, along with multiple fractured ribs.Doctors attributed his death to massive internal bleeding caused by the high-impact collision. Sonu, who was seated behind Abaan, reportedly suffered a fatal head injury and skull fracture. The emergence of the dashcam footage has provided investigators with potentially important visual evidence of the moments immediately preceding the crash. Police are examining the video along with eyewitness accounts, forensic findings and other evidence to determine the precise circumstances and cause of the accident.
