Many actors enjoy successful careers in Bollywood before choosing to step away from the movies. The biggest example of that is Bhagyashree who chose to leave the industry after getting married despite becoming a star with ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. Salman’s other co-star, actor Kanchan is one such example. Having shared screen space with stars like Salman, Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, and Akshay Kumar, she also carved a niche for herself in South Indian cinema before eventually leaving the film industry after being repeatedly typecast. So, where is Kanchan today?Born on April 17, 1970, Kanchan developed an interest in acting at an early age. While studying in college during the late 1980s, she ventured into modelling to explore opportunities in the entertainment industry. It was during this phase that filmmaker Saawan Kumar Tak spotted one of her modelling photographs while searching for a fresh face. Impressed by her natural charm despite her lack of acting experience, he offered her a role.Kanchan made her Hindi film debut in Sanam Bewafa (1991), starring Salman Khan. Although she played the lead actress’s close friend, the film’s commercial success brought her into the limelight and introduced her to audiences across the country.Despite becoming a familiar face after her debut, Kanchan found herself confined to supporting characters. Her innocent, girl-next-door image often led filmmakers to cast her as the heroine’s friend, sister, or the villain’s daughter rather than in lead roles.Throughout the 1990s, she featured in several notable Hindi films. She portrayed Radha in Amaanat (1994) opposite Akshay Kumar before gaining wider recognition as Karisma Kapoor’s sister Shalini in Govinda’s blockbuster Coolie No. 1 (1995). She also appeared alongside Karisma Kapoor in the popular song Husn Hai Suhana. Kanchan later worked with Shah Rukh Khan and Sridevi in Army (1996), while Ram Aur Shyam (1996) and Jurmana (1996) saw her sharing screen space with actors including Mithun Chakraborty and Sanjay Dutt.At the time, however, Bollywood’s leading heroine space was fiercely competitive, with stars such as Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Sridevi, Karisma Kapoor, and Raveena Tandon dominating the industry.Seeking stronger opportunities, Kanchan shifted her focus to South Indian cinema, where she finally landed lead roles. She entered Malayalam films with Gandharvam (1993), starring opposite Mohanlal. The film turned out to be a commercial success and significantly boosted her career.She also made a mark in Telugu cinema with Prema Pusthakam, playing the role of Charitra in the film that introduced Ajith Kumar. Her performance received critical appreciation and earned her the Nandi Special Jury Award for Best Performance.As the late 1990s approached, offers for Kanchan began to decline. The emergence of a new generation of actresses in South cinema increased competition, while Bollywood itself was witnessing changing trends. Reports suggested that she was uncomfortable with the growing demand for bolder roles and “item songs.” Rather than compromise on the kind of work she wanted to do, she chose to leave acting behind.Her final projects included Itihaas (1997), Mohabbat Aur Jung (1998), and Uljhan (2001), after which she quietly exited the entertainment industry.Unlike many former actors who remain active on social media or make occasional public appearances, Kanchan has embraced a life away from fame. As of 2025, she is reportedly settled in Mumbai and has maintained a low profile. According to reports, she now works as a drama teacher at a local institution, passing on her knowledge of acting and nurturing the next generation of performers.
