Somvati Amavasya is one of the most spiritually significant days in Sanatan Dharma. The day is considered highly auspicious for performing puja to the ancestors or forefathers. People perform various religious, spiritual and astrological activities on this particular day to appease them and express their gratitude to them. This is one of the most special Amavasya’s that falls on Somvar. Many devotees observe fast, visit various Ganga ghats to have holy bath and get engaged in charitable activities. Do’s

1. Worship Ancestors

The day is considered highly auspicious to perform puja dedicated to ancestors. You should invite brahmins to feed them and perform pitru tarpan though a qualified priest.

2. Pitru Gayatri

Yo can conduct the Pitru Gayatri for the salvation of your ancestors.

3. Worship Lord Shiva

The day is falling on Monday or Somvar that’s why it is known as Somvati Amavasya so one must worship Lord Shiva on this sacred day for the good health and well being. You can visit the temple and perform abhishekam to Shivalingam.

4. Engage in spiritual practices

You can perform hawan, yajna, reciting bhagavad gita, ramacharitmanas and other sacred texts on this holy day to seek the blessings and to get rid of all the past bad karma’s.

5. Worship peepal tree

This is one of the most powerful ritual to worship peepal tree as the day is dedicated to ancestors so one must worship peepla tree during Madhyahna time by lighting a diya with desi ghee and offering sweet water. This will help them to seek the blessings of ancestors.

6. Charity

You should donate clothes, seven types of grains, food, jaggery, salt, foot wear, mustard oil, black umbrella and other essentials to the people who need them. This will reduce the malefic effects of saturn and Rahu.

Don’ts

1. Avoid hair cut

It is very important to keep in mind that hair cutting on this day will bring negative karma in your life so better you avoid doing that.

2. Avoid nail cutting

You must avoid cutting your nails on this sacred day as this will not be considered auspicious doing such acts.

3. Avoid applying oil

People should avoid applying oil in hair as this will attract negative energy.

4. Don’t eat tamasik food

It is considered highly auspiicous day so one must avoid eating all the tamasik food such as non vegetarian food, eggs, onion and garlic.

5. Avoid bad habits

If you are an alcohol lover then you must avoid drinking on this particular day to avoid bad karma.

6. Don’s disrespect ancestors

The day is purely dedicated to worship ancestors so better you never disrespect them otherwise you will invite bad luck into your life if you do such things.
